Gilead Enterprises, creators of the Tranquilities Series for Hospital patients, has developed a "turn key" program to simplify the process should you choose to use this unique product for the benefit of your patients and staff. Gilead can provide the complete package or you can choose only the parts that you wish. We suggest the following steps.

The most logical persons in most hospitals to initiate a Tranquilities program is the chaplain, director of patient care or director of complementary therapies. First, test the idea with several key staff persons responsible for the medical/surgical unit, pain center, cancer center, pre-op, behavioral health units - and especially persons in your complementary therapy program, if you have one. Bring several of these persons together to talk about the benefits of implementing this program. Be sure to have them experience Track I or II of one of the CDs. Use a good quality CD player. Have headphones so that each person can also experience both the sound quality and full impact that your patients would enjoy. Second, test the product with some patients. Place a CD player on the bedside table and have them listen with headphones with a cord that is at least 1.2 meters long. [Gilead can provide one or more complete sets for this testing.] Use this feedback to determine whether to implement the program initially with a couple hospital units or your entire hospital. Gilead recommends a complete Tranquilities package (Tranquilities Series and CD player) be available on each bedside table.

This is a relatively small expenditure for a program that will make a significant difference for patients. Patients who use the CDs are likely to have a better hospital stay then those who do not. This results in good PR for the hospital and also positively affects your staff. Some hospitals will not have a problem financing this program from a contingency budget. Others are more likely to approve implementation if it does not cost the hospital anything. Yes, this is very possible! It has been done successfully elsewhere. Start a significant program for your hospital without costing your hospital a cent! Consider approaching a couple donors who might have interest in improving the spiritual well-being of patients. This can be an opportunity for the hospital to develop relationships with donors who would not otherwise contribute to medical needs. Gilead provides a sample letter for your use in approaching potential donors. Be bold. Don't hesitate to ask a donor for $5000 or $10,000. Your Fund Development or Advancement Office might have policies and procedures to follow and likely has a list of prospective donors.

Gilead offers one stop shopping for everything necessary to implement the program. We can provide you with CD players and headphones to best meet your needs.

Nurses, care managers, patient ambassadors, therapists (i.e. respiratory, behavioral), social workers, and chaplaincy staff will find Tranquilities to be a wonderful resource for many of their patients. However, they need to be introduced to the concept and benefits for patients. Arrange for a 30-minute in-service in each of the units where you want to implement the use of Tranquilities. Explain the benefits of Tranquilities for hospital patients. Invite them to get comfortable and listen to one of the 20 minute guided imageries. Use Track I or Track II as appropriate for your setting. Invite comments about how they experienced it. Explain how you want to implement the program and invite their assistance and feedback. You might want to consider inviting Gilead to make a presentation for upper level administrators and/or selected managers as a first step in training/preparing staff. Contact the Gilead sales representative for information about costs.

This is an opportunity to let your community know that your hospital cares deeply about the emotional and spiritual needs of our customers. Get your PR/Communications Department involved in making the most of this PR opportunity.
